A Reading List for Beginners
(Beginners in the process of un-schooling themselves, that is...)
Without too much preamble, here I am presenting a reading list that has proven its worth to me in my process of un-schooling and re-educating myself over the course of the last decade or so. I offer this to you sans excessive framing, caveats, or pointers. If you are curious, able to read, and know how to use a dictionary, then these books are within your grasp.
No excuses.
No one volume contains all the answers and many of them have more than their fair share of falsehoods, misinterpreations, or partial analyses. This is where your self-agency, dear readers, comes in. Exercise your faculty for critical thinking and make up your own mind. Debate, disagreement, and new emergent ideas therefrom are strongly encouraged.
My goal is to build this out into an annotated bibliography, and to supplement the public talks I am presenting on The Archetype of the Warrior Across Time: Jung, Campbell and Modern Perspectives. Eventually, they may be grouped into college and graduate-level courses uncoupled from institutional affiliation, bureaucracy, and excessive costs.
Wisdom and truth are our birthright. And as with all rights, they must be actively asserted, or they will be actively taken.
You are hereby invited, and μολὼν λαβέ, “molon Labe”!
Allow me clarify.
This purported quotation of King Leonidas of Sparta to the Persian Emperior Xerxes on the eve of the Battle of Thermopylae is usually translated “come and take them.” An event that in the West we hold up as exemplary of the triumph of the courageous few against the powerful many; of a confederation of free-thinking people versus a monolithic hierarchy. While the accuracy of that portrayal could be challenged, the importance of the mythical motif will stand. We cannot say with certainty what Leonidas’ literal words are in his Doric Greek dialect, but in their first historical reference by Plutarch in Classical Koine Greek, the translation is somewhat different than the current jingoistic phrase. And that difference is matters. Instead of the English parataxical phrase of two verbs “come and take them,” the original Greek phrase was a circumstantial participle — that is, the verb depends on the circumstance:
“When you come, take them.”
So here, in our case, the activity of learning is contingent upon your willingness to show up and do the work.
I welcome those with initiative, and look forward to our continued education through un-schooling, together.
DR. CHERLYN H.T. JONES
